Galatians 5:22-23 lists nine fruits — not as a checklist, but as the natural growth of a soul rooted in Christ.
Galatians 5:22-23 lists the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Notice — fruit, singular. Not fruits. They grow together, from the same tree.
Why fruit and not duty
Paul has just spent four chapters arguing that we are not justified by the works of the law. Now he tells us what life in the Spirit looks like — not as a new list of rules, but as the natural outgrowth of a soul rooted in Christ. Fruit grows; it is not screwed onto the branch.
Day 1 — Love
Agape: a love of decision, not just feeling. The love that lays down its life. The love God has poured into our hearts by the Spirit (Rom. 5:5).
Day 2 — Joy
Joy is not happiness. It is the deep gladness that survives circumstances. "The joy of the Lord is your strength" (Neh. 8:10).
Day 3 — Peace
Shalom — wholeness. Not the absence of conflict but the presence of right ordering. Christ is our peace (Eph. 2:14).
Day 4 — Patience
Long-temperedness. The willingness to wait, to bear, to keep loving the same difficult person.
Day 5 — Kindness
Active goodness toward the undeserving. The kindness of God leads us to repentance (Rom. 2:4).
Day 6 — Goodness
Moral excellence with a generosity to it. Not just abstaining from evil but doing positive good.
Day 7 — Faithfulness
Reliability. Showing up. Keeping promises. The mark of a soul that has been with God a long time.
Day 8 — Gentleness
Strength held in check. The opposite of harshness. Jesus describes himself this way (Mt. 11:29).
Day 9 — Self-control
The Spirit's gift, not gritted-teeth willpower. The freedom of a soul that no longer needs the sin to feel okay.
Reflection questions
- Which fruit is most evident in your life right now? Which is least?
- Where have you been treating fruit as duty rather than letting the Spirit grow it?
- Pray for one fruit this week — not for it to appear, but for the inner work that produces it.
