The event featured addresses from clergy and political figures, including U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who emphasized the impact of religious institutions on civic engagement.
The NBCUSA, one of the largest historically Black denominations in the United States, has historically maintained a focus on social justice and political advocacy. During this year’s session, speakers highlighted concerns regarding recent changes to state voting laws and the potential impact these measures may have on minority communities. Organizers stated that the objective of the gathering was to mobilize the denomination’s widespread membership to register voters and ensure high turnout in their respective districts.
The Rev. Boise Kimber, president of the NBCUSA, addressed attendees regarding the importance of overcoming logistical barriers at polling locations. He stated, “You are immovable.” The organization plans to coordinate with local congregations to provide resources for voter education and to assist with transportation to polls on election day.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke to the assembly about the intersection of faith-based organizing and legislative policy. She noted that the participation of church members in the democratic process remains a significant factor in shaping national priorities.
