Seven 'I am' declarations — bread, light, gate, good shepherd, resurrection, way, and vine — and what each tells us about Jesus.
Seven times in John's Gospel, Jesus uses the divine name — "I AM" (echoing Ex. 3:14) — and pairs it with an image. Each one is a window into who he is.
Day 1-2 — "I am the bread of life" (John 6)
After feeding the 5,000, Jesus claims to be the bread that satisfies forever. Manna in the wilderness was a foreshadowing. He is the substance.
Day 3-4 — "I am the light of the world" (John 8)
"Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." Light is more than information; it is the medium by which everything else is seen.
Day 5-6 — "I am the door" (John 10)
Doors mean access and protection. Jesus is the way in to the Father and the way out into life.
Day 7-8 — "I am the good shepherd" (John 10)
The shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Hired hands run when the wolf comes. Jesus does not run.
Day 9-10 — "I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11)
At the tomb of Lazarus, Jesus does not say "I bring resurrection." He says "I am." Resurrection is a person before it is an event.
Day 11-12 — "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14)
"No one comes to the Father except through me." A single road, not because the world is small, but because he is large.
Day 13-14 — "I am the true vine" (John 15)
Apart from him, nothing. Connected to him, fruit. Pruning is for those who are bearing fruit, not punishment but increase.
Reflection questions
- Which "I am" do you most need today? Why?
- Where are you trying to be your own bread, light, way?
- What does it mean for you, practically, to "abide in the vine" this week?
