Former Exodus International Leader Alan Chambers Charged With Soliciting a Minor

Faith Revealed

According to Religion News Service, Alan Chambers, the former head of the now-defunct ministry Exodus International, was arrested and charged with soliciting a minor for sexual activity. Law enforcement officials in Florida took the suspect into custody earlier this week following an investigation into online communications.

Chambers previously served as the public face of Exodus International, an organization that promoted conversion therapy, the practice of attempting to change a person’s sexual orientation through psychological or spiritual intervention. The ministry maintained significant influence among conservative religious groups for decades before facing mounting internal and external criticism regarding the efficacy and ethics of its programs.

In 2013, Chambers announced the permanent closure of the organization. At the time, he issued a public apology for the harm caused by the ministry’s teachings and admitted that the conversion methods promoted by the group were largely ineffective. The organization had previously received support from prominent religious figures, including James Dobson, who utilized the ministry’s resources to advocate for traditional views on sexuality.

Following the dissolution of the group, Chambers stepped away from public ministry roles. Court records indicate that the current charges stem from allegations that he used internet platforms to contact an individual he believed to be a minor. Prosecutors stated that the investigation involved multiple agencies working to monitor digital interactions.

A spokesperson for the local sheriff’s office confirmed that Chambers remains in custody while awaiting a bond hearing. Legal counsel for the defendant has not yet provided a formal statement regarding the specific allegations, though they confirmed they are reviewing the evidence provided by the state.

"We are currently evaluating the details of the charges filed against my client," said his attorney.

The court has scheduled an initial appearance for later this month. Prosecutors expect to present additional evidence during the preliminary hearing to determine if the case will proceed to a full trial. No further details regarding the investigation have been released by the district attorney’s office at this time.
