According to Christianity Today, a multi-decade project to translate the Bible into the Notsi language of Papua New Guinea reached its conclusion this week. Residents of the village of Lossu 1 held a formal celebration to mark the arrival of the completed text, which serves a population of approximately 3,800 people.
The translation process spanned 39 years, beginning in the mid-1980s. The effort involved coordination between local community members and international linguistics organizations dedicated to Scripture distribution. The Notsi language, spoken primarily in the New Ireland province, previously lacked a full written version of the Christian canon.
The dedication ceremony featured traditional processions and cultural performances as community members received the printed volumes. Local leaders and representatives from the translation team participated in the event, which drew attendees from across the region to the village church.
Project organizers stated that the long timeline was necessary to ensure linguistic accuracy and to train local native speakers in the translation process. The team focused on capturing the nuances of the Notsi dialect while maintaining the original meaning of the source texts.
"The completed Bible represents a significant milestone for our community," said a project coordinator during the presentation of the books.
The translation team worked alongside village elders to verify the terminology used throughout the text. This collaborative approach aimed to ensure the final product is accessible to both younger generations who are more fluent in national languages and older residents who primarily speak Notsi.
The distribution phase of the project is scheduled to continue through the end of the year. Local committees have been formed to manage the ongoing supply of books to neighboring villages and to assist with literacy programs designed to help residents read the new translation.
